Vascular Surgery
Vascular surgery refers to surgeries performed on blood vessels. The blood vessels can be arteries or veins, and can be located anywhere in the body. Vascular surgery is performed to open up diseased arteries or to bypass diseased arteries with new blood vessels.
Traditional vascular surgery involves the direct repair of diseased arteries with advanced and intricate surgical techniques using regional or general anesthesia. Common applications of vascular surgery techniques include:
- Treating blocked arteries by bypassing the blockage with one of the patient's own veins
- Performing a synthetic bypass graft repair of aneurysms in the arteries by replacing the diseased artery with a synthetic graft
